a lot of diabetes medications affect the duodenum (first part of the small intestine. Foods mix with stomach acid, then move into the duodenum, where they mix with bile from the gallbladder and digestive juices from the pancreas. [Medline Plus]).
11. How to treat heat rash?
a. This is a big issue that doesn’t get talked about enough. There are 3 types of infections: virus,
bacteria, fungus. Heat rash is like a fungus under the flange. Can be treated with Tinactin
powder, Lamisil spray.
b. Even after years with an ostomy, you can develop a yeast/fungus infection that causes skin
erosion like pustules with yellow or green fluid. Some people use colloidal silver/silver powder.
12. A quick poll found 7 members have hernias. Discussion about various sizes, brands of hernia belts. a. Nu Hope offers a 4” belt for those who find the 2” too small.
b. Mainly for a reducible hernia.
c. Some people have had problems with belt closers tearing their bag.
d. Hollister has a floating 2-piece flange; Convatex has an accordion flange.
13. Is it OK to wear a hernia belt after hernia surgery?
a. Yes. If Nu Hope, flat panel is best, sturdier
14. Can caregivers cut flanges ahead of time?
a. No problem. Some people pre-cut a full box at a time. n

The OASC is a resource for ostomates in Simcoe County that offers them support, education and a community to help them move on with their lives. This volunteer-led not-for-profit shares knowledge about and experience with the everyday issues, products, services and suppliers that affect people living with an ostomy (colostomy, urostomy or ileostomy) in both regions of Simcoe County:
• North Simcoe includes these townships: Clearview, Oro-Medonte, Ramara, Severn, Springwater, Tay, and Tiny, plus the towns of Collingwood, Midland, Penetanguishene, and Wasaga Beach, and the cities of Barrie and Orillia.
• South Simcoe encompasses the townships of Adjala-Tosorontio and Essa, and the towns of Innisfil Bradford West Gwillimbury and New Tecumseth (which includes Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham).
