Saffron told and retold stories about Magic, the Mountain and her Mother’s plans for apartments by the river. She was feeling really tired again, but her friends kept her going. They took it in turns keeping her company and spent the rest of the time cruising the shops.
Claire’s parents picked her up early, they’d finished their shopping and wanted to get all the little brothers and sisters into bed. Just looking at them all made Saffron feel sorry for Claire.
‘Hey, you lot! Just take a look at those kooky guys over there,’ whispered Ashley.
‘Don’t they just think they’re soooo cool,’ giggled Abigail.
Saffron could see that they were from her brother’s school because two of them were wearing colour-coded uniform. They were flipping through the racks of cheap C.D.'s next to the entrance of the music store opposite and laughing fit to burst. Saffron actually thought they looked like nice people.
A tall boy, skinny but well muscled, with red hair and freckles, walked towards their table. He was dressed in jeans and a black Velvet Underground tee-shirt, but the thing that really drew Saffron’s attention was his feet. Maybe they were just for show, but she could swear that he was wearing riding boots.
‘What’s all this about then?’ he asked. As she told him the basic facts she could see that his friends had started talking to the other girls. Abigail seemed to have instantly changed her
