CHAPTER 10.
GREEN MOUNTAIN DANCE
It’s Saturday already, thought Saffron, as she woke to another bright, clear, spring morning. It was going to be a long day; the dance would be going till midnight, but she was far too restless to sleep in.
‘You’re up early!’ remarked Angie as she placed another piece of bread in the toaster for her daughter. ‘The boys are still sleeping.’
‘Would you mind if I went exploring today?' asked Saffron, as she spread home-made blackberry jam on her toast. ‘I’d like to ride over towards Thornhill. It’s really weird, but I’ve never even thought of riding anywhere but Green Mountain. I’ve been getting used to Magic and it’s so lovely there ... but there are riding trails and even a Pony Club over on the south side of town. I’ve looked it up on the map - I know where to go.’ She made herself shut up; she knew her mother needed time to consider.
Angie was terrified by the thought of her daughter riding all alone along strange roads - through her mind flashed a long list of things that could go wrong, but she decided that to be an effective parent she would have to be brave. She swallowed her fears, smiled and replied confidently, ‘That sounds all right. I know you’ll be careful. Take your watch and don't be back too late.’
