I have seen these things happen many times before.' The interviewer thanked them for coming, then the show switched over to a story about cane toads.
Tom turned the T.V. off. They sat there, no one saying anything, until Saffron felt like screaming.
‘So, what do you think? Is it ... like, good or bad? Is it going to stop it happening or not?’ she demanded.
‘Ronnie, get-real!’ said her brother. ‘Don’t fall apart. It all looked pretty flash to me.’
‘The Mayor really is a loathsome little man,’ said her mother. ‘Athol and Paddy put on a good show, though.’
‘Yes, I agree, but that jolly, old crook really gives me the creeps,’ said her father. ‘I don’t think he’ll give up anything without a dirty fight, he’s got far too much invested in this project.’
Saffron’s head started aching, her family just seemed to be treating it all like a game - but she couldn’t blame them for that. She couldn’t tell them how serious the situation had become. She had started the fight with a serious attitude, but back then she had thought that loosing her horse would be the worst that would happen - now she was in deadly earnest.
She could not let the developers ruin Mobo’s home and kill his family - if she had to lie in front of the bulldozers or get arrested she would. Just knowing that Mobo existed made her feel very small and unimportant. That tiny, fragile bird was so special that there was no way that she dared let anyone else ever know her secret.
