Beside him Patrick looked really romantic - slim and elegant, a single lock of his tousled hair falling over his eyes, dressed in baggy dacks and a “Save Green Mountain” Tee-shirt.
They put a really good case for the environmental significance of the area, talking about rare and threatened plants and animals, endangered-species laws and the relevance of the old- growth trees.
'It takes well over a century for a eucalypt to develop the hollows that provide homes for a wide variety of species. What most people see as a dead or dying tree, up to three hundred fauna species see as homes for living, breeding and foraging,' Athol pointed out.
Paddy went on, much to Saffron’s delight, to talk about the importance of the grazing land as a buffer zone between the thick bush and the houses and activities of the town. 'Even the upper slopes of Green Mountain which are not in the building zone will be effected by the proposed suburb,' he said sadly in his soft, lilting tones. 'This untouched wilderness will be prone to frequent fires and erosion - overrun by noxious weeds and feral animals - become a dumping ground for poisons and garbage from the town.
