‘I have not!’ she retorted.
‘Whatever happened to water-rationing?’
‘Well at least I’m clean ... when did you last have a shower,
Stinky?’
‘The van’s packed, we’re about to leave. You’d better hurry or there’ll be nothing left to eat,’ said her brother, totally evading her question.
‘Have you got everything else that we need, apart from your instruments? Posters? Bluetack? Laptop? The Green Mountain C.D.? Petition forms? Pens for people to sign with?’
‘Yes, Miss Bossy-Boots. They’re all in the front of the van. Don’t talk with your mouth full - it’s disgusting.’
‘Well, how about change money? It’s a fundraiser for Green Mountain, so people are paying to get in. What if they don’t have the right cash?’
‘I’ve no idea, I don’t have any dosh,’ replied Charles. ‘Do you guys have any?’
The band members just shook their heads and went on eating. Saffron went into her bedroom again and raided her piggy- bank. She had thirty-six dollars in it, all in coins. It would just have to do. She tipped it into an old jewellery box and remembered, just as she was closing the door, to grab some of the other tee-shirts for her friends to wear.
They all squeezed into the van and set off for the short distance to the school. Mr Szczepanik, the head teacher, met them as they pulled up in front of the hall.
