The crowd swelled. Charles and Wolf grabbed their guitars and mounted the stage and Linda settled herself behind her drum-
kit with its tall stacks of cymbals. Charles tested his mike by introducing the band and telling everyone about Green Mountain. Most people didn’t take the slightest bit of notice and just kept right on chatting with their friends.
With a deafening screech and an unholy wail, Charles slid his hand down the strings of his electric-guitar and the band launched into their first number. The whole hall turned, stunned into silence, as the band let it rip.
Linda laid into her drums like a total maniac. It was fast, crazy and very, very, loud - her hands seemed to move faster than the eye could see, and her rhythms were just spot-on. Wolf had a totally frozen look on his face and was playing a steady tab-bass. His fingers were just walking across the strings and he looked so spaced out that he could have been on another planet.
