Mitch went back to his friends who were packing up the food stall.
Charles, grazed, muddy and wearing a torn singlet, vaulted onto the stage and spoke to the other band members, who stopped their playing. He picked up the mike and his electric guitar then stepped forward once more to address the crowd.
‘Hi dudes, we’re back! I’m not sure what those scumbags were on about, but, if they think they’re going to get rid of us, to stop our fight, they’ve got another thing coming. There’s a protest outside the Council Chambers on Wednesday. Come and tell the Council what you think of their shonky plans! Get in on the act, create mayhem! Till then, dudes, just chill out and relax with our latest song.’
Chuckie Chunder and the Cheeseburgers started playing their most mellow number of the night, Song for Green Mountain, the one that Charles had been inspired to write after the spotlighting expedition. The blue light of a camera-flash lit up the band. Saffron couldn’t see who was taking the photos but she wished she could get a copy for her family.
Plenty of people helped to clean up while the band played and soon everything but the band’s gear was stacked up and ready to go.
‘Where on earth did Abby go?’ Saffron enquired of her friends.
