The little bird jumped off its perch with a flutter of tiny wings and landed about a metre away. Suddenly there was the sound of a whip being cracked, a dog barking and a car hooting, all from the direction of the bird. If the bird meant to get Saffron's attention it was succeeding.
‘Hello, hello! Ronnie, calm down! Believe me, I will help you,’ admonished the metallic voice which sounded as though it came from a telephone.
‘I don’t believe it. Someone’s playing a trick on me. If it’s you making that noise, bird, then who trained you? You can’t know what you are saying, it isn’t possible!’ cried Saffron.
‘How do you know what is possible child? You are only a fledgeling. Be calm. We shall help you.’
‘I don’t believe it! I’m going crazy ! I’m getting out of here!’ yelled Saffron as she leapt up and raced hell-for-leather down the hill, jumping logs and boulders and setting loose stones crashing down after her. She headed straight towards the horses, who threw their heads up in the air, snorting, and headed off at a gallop towards the other side of the paddock, bucking and pigrooting
on the way.
