Saffron, on the other hand, had a grin spreading across her face and her eyes were twinkling. ‘Oh, chill out Abb, this is great. It’s awesome. I wondered where he’d got to!’ she said, as she waved cheerily towards the group of about twenty bikers driving in formation down the main street on their great, black and chrome, roaring machines. They came to a halt just at the edge of the crowd.
Abigail squeaked, panic stricken, ‘... but who are they? They don’t look safe!’
‘Of course they’re not safe. But they’re on our side.’ Saffron answered with calm satisfaction. ‘It’s "security." Oh, cut it out, you twits,’ she said as her friends still looked nervous, ‘I have told you my father rides a bike - well ... he’s brought along some of his friends, that’s all.’
They all stared at her in amazement, but they followed after her as she went up to a long-haired biker, just removing his helmet, and gave him a warm hug. Soon they were shaking hands with Tom and his friends and praising his yummy chocolate cake. They gave the bikers a couple of their banners so everyone would know they were friends.
By this time, the organisers had set up the public address system and started on speeches in support of Green Mountain as a wilderness area. Saffron wasn’t in a mood to concentrate on speeches, there didn’t seem to be anything she hadn’t heard before anyway. Instead, she and the girls kept their placards held high and cruised the crowd for people they knew.
