Three police cars pulled up in front of the building.
Several important looking officers got out - but still no Mayor.
They went into the building.
For about twenty minutes the crowd stayed put. No one was
about to leave before they knew what was happening; but there was no more shouting. It was as close to an expectant silence as
you can get in a couple of hundred people. The girls squeezed through the press of bodies and managed to reach the steps where they sat down, unnoticed by the police guards.
It was getting dark by this time and it was rather scary. They were glad to be sitting together - away from the crowd.
‘Hey! There’s your mother, Ronnie!’ exclaimed Ashley, who was sitting closest to the entrance of the building. Looking across, she saw her mother descending the steps next to a man wearing a dark suit. The police were keeping them separate from the crowd.
Saffron seemed to be in the grip of ice-cold fingers and her head was spinning. What was going on? ... Where had Angie disappeared to? The whole crowd was moving back over towards the town square. She lurched to her feet and stumbled down the steps after the others.
Saffron couldn’t see a thing with all the large adults standing in front of her, but someone came up behind her and roughly rubbed the top of her head. She knew it must be her brother. ‘What’s going on?’ she asked.
‘Angie’s at the microphone with someone from the council.
