‘There’s no way our "honest" Mayor will allow that to go through!’ commented someone in the group.
‘He wasn’t here tonight ... just didn’t turn up! Not even an official apology for his absence,’ Angie answered.
‘Wouldn’t they give a reason?’
‘No way! They know something ... but they've shut right up about it. "No comment" was all I heard.’
‘I wonder what’s happened to the evil, old sleaze-bag. Been run over by a bus, perhaps?’ asked another member of the small circle.
‘Well, I don’t give a rat’s-arse!’ said a third person, ‘Likely, he’s been killed by his own conscience. The less we see of him 'round here, the better.’
‘Yes,’ commented Patrick. ‘His sins might have caught up with him ... what goes around comes around.’
‘Maybe he’s been caught taking bribes,’ added Saffron, whom nobody had even noticed. The adults all looked at her in astonishment, as if they hadn’t thought of that. ‘Can we go home soon Angie? Please?’
Angie looked down at the small, pale, tear-stained face and said some quick good-byes. All the way home, sitting in the back of her friends’ tiny car, she held her daughter close. Tension, which had built up over the last two weeks had left Saffron feeling totally drained, and she dare not tell even her mother the major reason for most of her fears.
