If Saffron had met the phone a month ago, she would have been over the moon. As it was, she could only compare it unfavourably with Mobo. It couldn’t fly or spy. It had an absolutely crap personality. But Mobo didn’t live with her and never would ... It would be great to have her own phone, and think how livid with envy Abigail would be.
‘Thanks, Tom,’ she said, smiling with triumph at the thought. She went over to him and wrapped her arms around his slightly chubby belly. She hugged him and whispered, ‘You’re brilliant, it’s just what I wanted.’
Angie was struggling with her emotions. She kept smiling, frowning, smiling, then frowning again. How had her dodgy partner managed to buy such extravagant presents for his children? What had he been up to? Her expression changed to one of pure astonishment as Tom unzipped a third, smaller pocket and handed her a wad of more one-hundred dollar bills than Saffron had ever seen in her life. Angie looked stunned and started to sway as she clutched the money. Tom steadied her by putting his arm around her waist.
‘That’s your present, love. None of you ever thought my book would come to any thing, did you?’ Angie, being a totally honest person, silently shook her head.
‘Well it did, actually. I’ve had three publishers fighting over it. They seem to think it’s going to sell better than any of their current titles. I don’t give a damn. I just enjoyed writing it - but it did mean I could insist on a nice, fat cash-advance.
