It hadn’t been broadcast until the six-thirty news - just when Saffron had heard it via the little brown bird!
Was it so much worse for the talking bird to turn into a bird that received radio transmissions? Saffron didn’t know. It was all too much for her tired brain to work out. The whole idea of talking birds made her own problems seem less important. Whether things went badly or not, it was certainly turning into a huge adventure! On that last thought she fell asleep.
Morning came, bringing with it the return of Saffron’s worries. She heated up some curry and rice, leftover from the night before, and turned on the T.V. There was no news, but she watched "The Simpsons" for half an hour while she ate. Then, feeling that she had wasted enough time, she gathered up her courage and her riding gear and walked to Green Mountain.
Magic was grazing with the herd over near the creek, so Saffron climbed straight up Rocky Knoll. As soon as she reached the shade of the trees a small, brown bird swooped down and landed on her shoulder. Arms outstretched, she watched it hop along her sleeve and perch on her wrist.
‘Good morning,' she said to Mobo as she sat down on a log. 'Please, will you tell me all about yourself? How you do the things you do?'
It felt very awkward to be talking to a bird, but these were the lines she had been rehearsing all the way to the paddock. Yesterday she had felt like she was dreaming, but now she was determined to be polite.
