‘This I have not seen, will you make it work?’ asked the bird. ‘First you have to stop jumping all over it,’ she snapped.
'It doesn’t do anything till you lift up the handset.’
She lifted up the handset and put it to her ear to check for the
dial-tone. The bird hopped onto her shoulder to listen as well. ‘I’m sorry, I’m not allowed to ring anyone without asking - the numbers I ring show on the bill and I get in trouble. I wish I could ring my friends from my old school but it’s long distance and Angie says it costs too much.’ She put the handset down and immediately the phone rang.
A strange, high-pitched, wailing noise came from
the speaker.
