A lot of noise was coming from the house. ‘Uh, oh ... Tom’s got his Jimmy Hendrix records up loud again,’ she muttered to her brother as he walked up the driveway. The house even smelt exciting, with the mingled smells of freshly brewed coffee, hot bread and some sort of rich, smoky incense. The lounge seemed full of people who were sprawled over the couch and armchairs.
A very tall man, dressed in black, with slanted eyebrows and side-whiskers was standing in the middle of the room, talking loudly and waving his arms about. Saffron's first thought was that The Cat in the Hat had come to life and invaded her house. There were shrieks of laughter in response to a story he was telling - something about a man and a dog.
