Paul Denton is a new trance talent from Ireland who’s getting a lot of attention lately from the big hitters in the scene. His iDentify radio show has gained him fans worldwide, where he debuts regular original tracks and reworks that are totally exclusive to his sets. Tracks such as ‘Say My Name’ with Audrey Gallagher and ‘Second Chapter’ under his Flynn & Denton duo project have stood out clearly over 24 months and highlighted Paul’s ear for a good record. Tipped by Aly & Fila, John O’Callaghan, John Askew amongst others: "Paul Denton is a name to watch closely".
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for some of the Zone Magazine readers who might not be too familiar with you?
Well I’m a Trance DJ/Producer from Dublin. I’ve been DJ'ing for about 15 years now and producing, it’s going on 8 years since I first started. I’ve tracks signed to labels like Subculture & Kearnage. My sound is up tempo no nonsense 138+ uplifting & tech trance.
You have released tracks on some of the biggest labels in trance such as Tytanium Recordings, Kearnage Recordings and Subculture to name a few. What gave you the confidence to approach such big labels?
When I first started out I never really sent to the bigger labels because my tracks weren’t very good but as they got better I started to get support from the likes of John O’Callaghan so I started to send them tracks. My first track on Kearnage was a remix which Bryan approached me for. I must of spent about 6 weeks tweaking it to get it to sound right, but it done well and was played by Aly & Fila at ASOT event in Russia, I was delighted with that.
Over the past year or so we have seen more and more Psy-Trance being introduced into DJ's sets and even into their productions, why do you think this is? Do you think people are starting to find the “140+” sound slightly boring at the moment?
Psy has been in some Trance DJ's sets for the last 5 or so years, Simon Patterson, Bryan Kearney etc. have been playing it for years its just becoming more mainstream in the last couple of years. I think DJ's like to change it up a bit in their sets psy gets a great reaction out live thats why they play it. For me personally I
think DJ's shouldn’t stick to one style especially when playing live you should always throw in something that will surprise the crowd. The Tech Trance sound has started to come back in to so theres a nice balance in sub genres I think in Trance at the moment.
Im sure some people find it boring you will always get that. Go back 4 or 5 years ago and there was only a handful of DJ's playing & producing 140+ Trance now next to everyone is which makes it harder to find good music because there is so much generic tracks being made.
Sticking with the topic of the whole “140+” sound. A lot of overly passionate trance followers often criticize DJ's for playing a more commercial sound or something slightly different from the typical trance style. If you had the choice of playing one track of any genre free of criticism and judgement from your fans and followers, what would that track be?
