‘But Amber, he never met up with his friends’, she explained.
He must have gone drinking alone. It turned out there was no arrangement to meet the lads. I didn’t understand it.
‘It wasn’t like Tony to lie’, I wept.
‘The police said it was black ice that made the car skid’ Sherry justified, ‘It was a long time before he was found on that back road because he was not meeting anyone, there was no one to question where he was’. She gave my hand a loving squeeze,
‘So Amber, you are not to blame’.
‘You have been so kind to have put your life on hold for me, but you need to go home now’.
‘It’s going to take a while for the pain to ease Amber,’ she spoke softly, ‘I can stay as long as you need me’.
‘Sherry, I have to be alone to think what I’m going to do with the rest of my life’, I felt completely numb and a sudden exhaustion came over me.
‘I’m on the end of the phone day or night if you need me’.
A hug and a kiss, ‘see you soon’ she whispered, and Sherry was gone.
Over the next few weeks I packed only the most treasured gifts that Tony and I gave each other. Sherry called over as promised and I told her I had decided to give in my notice at work. I informed her that Tony’s solicitor had rang and asked me to come into the office.
‘He needs to speak to me urgently’, I told her. ‘He probably wants to tell me to vacate the apartment’. ‘But can you not offer to buy it? After all it’s been your home for the last ten years, you have rights you know’, She advised.
