Rex needed to locate his aunt still, Tony’s sister, she was an important person to him now and he didn’t even know if she knew about her brother or not. Mr. Henry was working on it and hoped to have some information for him soon. He really needed it. The second week in January I went to see Dr. Lewis for the results of the blood tests I had taken the week before, I had still felt like I hadn’t fully recovered from the bug and wanted to make sure there wasn’t something else wrong.
‘Well Amber according to your bloods you’re fit and healthy’, Dr. Lewis informed me, ‘I’m going to give you a course of folic acid you should have taken them well before this but better late than ever’, he smiled and then asked, ‘you do want this baby?’
I sat with my mouth open, but no words came out, ‘I know it takes a moment to sink in’, he said writing on his notepad.
‘I can’t be pregnant’, I heard myself say.
‘Surely you know how this has happened’? he laughed, ‘Do you not want children’? ‘Oh yes! I do, I do. It’s just, we didn’t plan it’, the tears blurred my vision as I searched for a tissue in my purse.
‘People seldom do’, he said still smiling and handed me the prescription, ‘I’ll see you in two months’.
‘How many weeks am I’? I realized I had been vomiting since my bug.
‘I would say from your dates you are about 12 weeks gone’.
‘But I have been careful’, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, ‘How??’
‘Well you did have that bad dose around that time which could have affected your contraception’, he looked at me over his glasses, ‘we will arrange a scan for you to confirm a date if you would like’.
