Sherry rang, asking me to meet her after work for a quick drink. I told her about my meeting and I asked her to order doubles for me, I was expecting the worse. I ordered a taxi and I was soon on my way.
‘Well Miss Shankey, it’s a pleasure to inform you, you’re the sole heir to Tony O’Keefe’s estate’. Mr. Henry handed me a buff envelope packed full of documents. ‘Are you sure he has no living relatives?’ I said, pulling out the pages one by one, ‘I know there was a sister a few years ago, she lives abroad’.
Inspecting the pages, I was shocked at the extent of Tony’s wealth.
‘I was Tony’s solicitor for the last ten years’, he explained, ‘I believe there was a sister, but he doesn’t mention his sister or any living relative in his will’.
‘Miss Shankey the will is legal, and you must except you’re the sole heir’, Mr. Henry said sympathetically.
I left the office in a daze and before I had realised it I had walked the mile to meet Sherry in our favorite bar near the Liffey.
‘What are you going to do Amber?’, Sherry said excitedly.
‘I’m still going to leave but now I can do what I want without any money worries’, it was hard to be as excited as Sherry.
‘Oh! Amber, take your time and think about it, please’, She begged.
I was going to sell up and make a fresh start. She could tell by the look on my face I had made up my mind.
The apartment sold quickly, fully furnished. Although sad, I was relieved. As I packed my Renault with the half a dozen boxes I came across the little shoebox that Bill had given me.
