My hens were laying very well, giving me a good supply of fresh eggs which I’d share with old Mrs. Cannon a half a dozen a week and of course Joe got a few each week for his family. He calls every morning whether he has mail for me or not and gives me all the gossip and sometimes a fruitcake his wife has made.
Spring has come and gone quickly and although life has a much slower pace here. I noticed that everything grows at much faster. The garden was looking lush and the vegetables were showing their heads. Most of the trees had their beautiful green foliage and I now had a family of ducks, four chicks and a mother and father. They live in the brook at the end of the garden I love watching them swimming about and playing. When mum wants a rest away from the family she waddles up the little bank and sits under the large apple tree. I have taken some photos, so I can do a painting in the future, I’m just waiting for the right light.
On Monday I went to the village to do my usual shopping and called in to see Penny staying for lunch at her request. Monday being a quiet day Penny had time to chat uninterrupted.
‘Penny is everything alright?’, I asked as I cleared my plate, ‘you don’t seem yourself’.
‘Well Amber, Paul has just told me he would like to go traveling for a few months’, She said sounding upset.
‘He needs to have a little freedom. He has been looking after me since his dad passed’, she continued, ‘it’s just I don’t think I could manage this place by myself’. ‘You have Mr. Hut’s son to do the heavy cellar work and surely there is someone in the village who would help in the bar’.
