According to the CDC report, the top three un- derlying conditions among those hospitalized with COVID-19 were diabetes, chronic lung disease, and cardiovascular disease.
While data is still coming in about the impact of this pandemic, it stands to reason that many obese pa- tients, especially those that are severely obese with a body mass index above 40, will have other obesi- ty-related health conditions that could be associa- ted with a more severe course of COVID-19.
In general, severely obese patients are a more di- fficult population to manage in the intensive care setting, and may have difficulty recovering if they develop a serious illness, particularly a respiratory infection such as COVID-19.
