patterns. In conjunction with these assessments, daily subjective reporting of how an athlete is feeling can be very useful. Athletes typically can verbalize feelings of increased fatigue, soreness/pain, or general weakness as compared to a preseason baseline. These subjective reports can be good indicators of breakdown and should be used to help guide decisions about participation or the need for extra recovery time. Additionally, one of the best ways to help develop resilient athletes is to include appropriately programmed strength and conditioning training during the competitive season. Resistance training will help build the body back up to a point where it can confidently perform and withstand the forces of sports.
Unfortunately, with all of the prevention in the world, injuries will occur. Once an injury progresses to the point where it is starting to impact daily function it is best to seek the care of a sports physical therapist. Your therapist will aim to find strength or mobility limitations that may be resulting in undue stress to your joints or leading to soft tissue breakdown. For more information on managing overuse injuries, check out Emerson Hospital’s Sports Therapy Services, with new locations in Westford and Chelmsford.
