Together Everyone Accomplish More
Team Work
By Eugene Binda
As the two teams are about to take the ice surface for what is expected to be a very competitive, fast, hard hitting, and emotional game for all.
However before both teams can enter the surface, they are waiting until signaled by the third team the o ciating crew to start the much-anticipated contest, without the o cials this would just be a controlled scrimmage.
Just like the players, the o cials must work as a one unit to ensure the game is played safely, and allow both teams a fair chance to win through fair play.
First the o ciating team must commit to common goals; is the crew ready for the contest? Did they all take personal responsibility for game preparation, by reviewing the supervisor’s weekly memos and game situational lms? Does the team have a solid understanding of all-national and leagues rules? Knowing just parts of the rulebook are not enough, don’t be a deer in the headlights when asked for your version of what happened and how does the rule apply.
Trust plays a big role on the team and successful crews trust each other. The senior o cial is the person responsible for the overall enforcement of rules and safety. Does the senior o cial create an environment to make sure every o cial when questioned has the con dence to communicate his or her version in order to get the call right?
The senior o cial will need the correct information to defuse any potential are up with the coaching sta as long he or she has the correct information.
Teamwork does not end when the game is over, e ective teams use the post game discussions to reinforce what they have learned positive and in areas that need attention.
The lessons learned in each gamearetransferableskillsetsyou can take to your next game and boost your con dence. Share your experiences in a positive manner whether it is an experienced crew or help a new member of the crew gain the con dence need to achieve his or her goals as they move up the ladder to higher level games.
