Some History of Druid Theater
&
Steve & Belle’s Restaurant
Seen through the eyes of others.
Larry Mullinix The pharmacist’s name was Papermiester. Do not know if the spelling is correct. I work as a Realtor for Long and Foster and
where that building is now, there was a Western clothing store and restaurant run by the Count family named Count's Western Wear. They also
owned one in DC. On Saturday afternoon at the Druid Theater, there were double feature western movies my Granddad use bring me to see.
Next door to the movies there was a restaurant Named Steve and Belle’s, and my granddad would take me there for pie and ice cream. Now in
then some named Cowboys would come to the Druid, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Audrey, Pick Temple, Jimmy Dean, etc., and appear on Stage
there. I do remember the Acme Store and Bellison's Grocery. Where Tom and Rays is located now, there was a Clothing store named Zim’s that
caught fire. Underneath Woody Mains Barber’s Shop was a Pool Room, which moved behind Woody's later on. The building where Gladhill
Meats and Patricia McKenzie's office is now probably one of the oldest in town. I remember all the things these people are talking about. Slim
McGarvey has a great memory. There is much more to this saga.
Chuck Rhinehart Such a great place. Steve and Belle always made us feel welcome. When I see the restaurant scene in the movie, "Grease", I'm
reminded of Steve and Belles.
Tina Dixon I remember they had the gumball machinen, and if you got the special one you got a free piece of pie. Somehow I got it a lot an
would pick the chocolate pie with whip cream. My sister Donna and I would go there a lot for lunch or Tom & Rays of course but I always cried
for Steve and Bells, it was that chocolate pie I was seeking. Lol...with real whipped cream!
Lynn Haines Those cheeseburgers were tasty! Such a great memory. Kids had a place to go and hang out. We really did have the best place to
grow up. Our little town had a bowling alley, skating rink, theater, and our beloved Steve & Belles.
