Digitizing State of Seed Certification System in Ethiopia
D igitizing St at e of S eed Certification Syst em in Et hiopia
The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) is currently coordinating and implementing a project entitled
“Strengthening seed certification capacity as an intervention to address seed quality problems in
Ethiopia” financed by Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). It is being implemented
in partnership with Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and SNNP regions Seed Regulatory Authorities. The
initiation of designing the project emanated from the prevailing capacity gap of implementing
partners and seed laboratories of the aforementioned regions taking into account of human,
logistic and other systemic bottlenecks.
The objective of the project is to strengthen seed certification service coverage capacity and
enhance seed quality and grain productivity of smallholder farmers. In view of this objective, the
beneficiaries of the project include: four regional and one federal regulatory authority and 16
seed laboratories in four project regions. The project also assists the seed inspectors to inspect
the seed field properly. Likewise, competent members of the technical committee drawn from
different institutes are supported to evaluate candidate varieties supplied by the Institute of
Agricultural research, higher Institute, public and private companies.
The Project has four components including:
