THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY
Srinivasa Ramanujan
This is the story of a mathematical prodigy and his proclivity towards the subject despite having
a life of poverty and neglect. His amazing ability to understand message and meaning lying in
numbers and his genius and extraordinary brilliance in number theory and pattern of the number
brought the focus of entire world towards India. The effect that words have on a poet and
emotions on a lyricist, was the same that the principles of mathematics had on S. Ramanujan. “
Mathematics is not about numbers & equations, Computation or algorithms; it is about
understanding “ Let begin the story of his legendary being S. Ramanujan was a largely self-
taught pure mathematician hindered by poverty and ill-health. His highly original work has
nd
Considerably enriched number theory. December 22 is celebrated as National Mathematics
Day as he was born on that day in 1887, 32 years as he was died on 26 April 1920. However, S.
Ramanujan had no formal training in mathematics. He used to always write on a Slate with chalk
and when one of his friend asked him to write on paper. He replied –“When food is the problem,
how can I find money for paper? “I may require four reams of paper every month.”
“Success is not Just a measure of How big you can Dream. It is also a measure of how much you
can do”.
