We’ve covered a lot of ground in this book, our aim being
to give you the best possible guidance to help you shine in
a tough interview.
We’ve covered:
n the nature of competencies and how organisations use them
n how to prepare yourself
n some shorthand ways of assessing what a questioner is getting at – ‘task,
thought, people’
n some ways of building good answers – CaR
n above all, examples of poor and better answers to help you to practise
framing your own impressive answers.
Throughout, we have tried to distil many years of experience (as interviewers
and designers of interviews) into practical tips and guidance that will help you
to do your best.
We have also made the point that, all too often, we tend to think of interviews
as adversarial occasions, where one party is trying to catch the other out.
Indeed, in giving you all this guidance we risk falling into the trap ourselves –
by implying that there are specific ways to ‘outwit’ an interviewer. A final piece
of advice, then, is to try to get out of this mindset!
