Introduction
Higher education includes education after school that is graduation, post-graduation,
doctorates etc. It is acquired through colleges and universities that give us degrees,
diplomas and certifications.
Indian higher education system is said to be the third largest in the world.

• In Ancient India, Nalanda, Takshshila etc were the bodies of higher education.
• The University Grants Commission is the main coordinating body for higher
education in India. It was set up in 1953 to ensure quality education and
compliance with standards for education. It is a statutory body recognized by
an Act of Parliament, by the government of India.
• 15 institutions have been accredited by UGC, helping and supporting it in its
operations.
• The February 2017 data reports 789 universities, 37204 colleges and 11443
stand-alone institutions in India.
