employment opportunities and the Northern province of the nation hailed

• After the Independence, the nationalist groups of Sinhalese forced the
government to make the laws that eliminate the Tamils from their
opportunities and rights. The passing of only Sinhalese act was one of
such moves by the government in addition to the deprival of Tamil
plantation workers from their firms in 1949. The constitution was framed in
favour of Sinhalese and Buddhism and this caused agitations in the
country.
• To oppose the open discrimination, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was
founded in 1976. The mission of this association was to attain separate

1983.
• Indian government offered military support to the Sri Lankan government
to curb the Tamil radical forces. This move enraged the LTTE activists and
led to the assassination of Indian Prime Minister then, Late Shri. Rajiv
Gandhi. This is the major issue that led to the conflict between both the
nations.
