Kay Sekimachi
Weaver Kay Sekimachi was influenced
by Bauhaus weaver Anni Albers and stud-
ied with Bauhaus-trained weaver Trude
Guermonprez before creating the textile
innovations for which she is known. Guer-
monprez “… really opened my eyes to
what weaving could be,” Sekimachi says.
“From double weaving, I realized that you
could weave more layers. And so, by ex-
perimenting with multiple layers, I came
upon the pieces that eventually became
my monofilament hangings.” In works like
Study for Crossed-Warp Effect (Ritual and
Reverence), the teachings of these artists—
still deeply relevant to modern design—are
refracted through Sekimachi’s uniquely
original perspective.
