Naoko Serino
For 28 years, Naoko Serino has chosen to
unravel jute once twisted for utility, and
to face its liberated fibers. “What I once
discarded, she says, — the frayed ends –
revealed an unexpected beauty when held
against the light: fragile, porous, and filled
with air. That moment stirred me deeply
and became the beginning.” When freed
from its utilitarian purpose, jute unravels
not only itself but also Serino’s own heart,
guiding her toward forms both unbound
and unforeseen.
It is a dialogue with the material, a resis-
tance, and a shaping of memory itself, she
says. At times, the forms take on a self-de-
nying quality, yet through that struggle,
by persisting, new shapes emerge — as if
summoned by light. Rooted 6 (Reading Be-
tween the Lines) is one such form — born of
that resistance and the possibilities it holds.
