Glen Kaufman
In the 1980s, Glen Kaufman created a
series of pile-woven prayer rugs. All were
woven of natural-dyed silk using vari-
ous plant materials. A smaller series of
these works from 1983 took the form of
diminutive prayer rugs with McDonald’s
arches replacing the traditional mihrabs
(arch-shaped designs that indicate the di-
rection of Mecca that are often a feature of
traditional prayer rugs). Kaufman thought
Americans’ devotion to McDonald’s justi-
fied a double arch in the work Prayer Rug
III (Ritual and Reverence).
