Yong Joo Kim
Weight of Commitment: 4 Years Old (Reading
Between the Lines) stems from the complex
emotions Yong Joo Kim faced during the
IVF process. Rather than expressing these
emotions directly, Kim allowed her creative
process to reflect them. She pressed materials
with her hands, mimicking the physical and
emotional pressure she endured. As the piece
hung on the wall, gravity pulled it downward,
adding a weight that echoed her own weight of
responsibility as an artist and a woman.
An unexpected and meaningful moment
emerged during the photography of the piece.
As light and shadow played across the work,
the silhouette of a child appeared—seemingly
around four years old—floating in mid-air.
Weight of Commitment: 4 Years Old is not
merely a sculptural object but a symbol of
resilience, beauty, and the transformation of
struggle into creation. It invites viewers to
reflect on their own lives and recognize how
the pressures they bear can be reshaped into
sources of strength and inspiration.
