At the beginning of 2022, Irina Kole-
snikova completed the tapestry, Homage
to Magritte (Reading Between the Lines).
The juxtaposition of a background of un-
dyed linen and subtle figures in dyed silk
evokes associations with fabrics from
archaeological excavations. The tapes-
try presents a dialogue with images from
René Magritte’s paintings that highlights
anonymity – human figures devoid of in-
dividuality are depicted with a giant apple
and a solid dark mass below. The image
references the notion of how unimport-
ant a person’s individuality sometimes is
– how people look like just a dark mass in
the eyes of autocratic rulers.
