Irina Kolesnikova
When Irina Kolesnikova started working
in textile, one of her sources was miniature
Coptic textiles, the combination of linen
background and a colorful silk imagery.
In the Photoatelier #13 (Ritual and Rev-
erence) series, she combines these mate-
rials and adds old black-and-white photos,
playing with images from these pictures,
using silhouettes, details of dress, signs
of profession. She creates collage and im-
itates collage in woven technique. We do
not recognize a specific person in these
pieces, because the identities are not im-
portant to the series – it is the condensa-
tion and rarefaction of color and texture
that is essential. These works explore the
paradox of a contemporary art language
and ancient handweaving technique.
