Gyöngy Laky
Visual metaphors can slide past au-
thoritarian controls. Gyöngy Laky has
pondered how she has resisted the ‘cen-
sor’ in her own work. With Lie Ability
(OUCH) (Reading Between the Lines) Laky
was trying to make an oblique reference to
her unhappiness about the 2016 election
outcome. She had heard many of the lies in
the campaign and feared the man now in
charge. The title is a double entendre – a
small hint to her thinking beyond the work
itself. The word “OUCH” offers to view-
ers, the opportunity to read into the work
what is in their minds and hearts once Laky
has attracted their attention. That is her
understanding of the power of art to evade
censorship. “Lies are an enormous part
of the current political conversation,” she
says. “Evading censorship today opens the
opportunity for resistance.”
