Norma Minkowitz
Norma Minkowitz started with a giant cro-
cheted flower head not really knowing how
this sculpture, Venus Trapped (Reading
Between the Lines), would evolve. As it
progressed, her inspiration leaned toward
the female figure. Then, in combination
with this giant flower head, she started
creating thorn-like shapes that resembled
female fingernails. Once painted red, her
path was evident. The flower, generally a
symbol of renewal, peace and celebration
became a Venus fly trap – a persistent
threat to population species –using thorns
and sharp red fingernails to ward off any
attacks. It also became a symbol of resis-
tance defending oneself against unwanted
behavior. The beautiful flower can change
to become a fighter if need be.
