Since wooden twigs are a lightweight material, McQueen needed to develop a system of support for his larger pieces. He added a skirt-like form or dress to this male figure to help it stand. McQueen didn’t see this as a problem, as men wear skirts in many cultures. In a play on words, Guise refers not only to a style of dress, but also “guys.” It is one of four Guise sculptures that he created.
