New Year's Food Traditions


                                                           Black eyed peas, cabbage, greens, cornbread and ham are known in
                                                           the Southern US as lucky foods to eat for New Year's.  Corned beef
                                                           and cabbage along with potatoes, carrots and onions are eaten in
                                                           Ireland for a New Year filled with luck and abundance.  Australians
                                                           celebrate the New Year with a barbecue and  if you're in Scotland,
                                                           well, you better have your shortbread in tow if you're going over to a
                                                           friends house because it is expected.  I asked for my Facebook friends
                                                           to let me know what they're eating New Year's Day and got some
                                                           interesting ideas!

                                                           THE PIZZA PLACE - BLACK EYED PEA PIZZA
                                                           Michelle Wisdom shared that their family's New Year's Day tradition
                                                           is The Pizza Place Black Eyed Pea Pizza.  It's served just once a year
                                                           on January 1st and comes with onion, black eyed peas, bacon and
                                                           jalapenos on request.  If you know me, you know my adventurous
                                                           palate and I can assure you, my family will be trying this interesting
                                                           pizza New Year's Day!!

                                                           HAM, BLACK EYED PEAS AND CABBAGE
                                                           Former Parker Co. 4-H Programming Assistant, Kimberly McClintock
                                                           keeps with the traditional southern classics of ham, black eyed peas
                                                           and cabbage.  Kimberly shakes it up just a bit by broiling the
                                                           cabbage instead of boiling.  "I cut it up, put it on a cookie sheet with
                                                           olive oil or avocado oil, salt, pepper and whatever seasoning I'm
                                                           feeling and broil it until the ends are a little crispy.  Sometime you
                                                           may have to add oil and toss it around during the cooking process."


                                                           BLACK EYED PEA SALAD AND PIONEER WOMAN'S SKILLET
                                                           CORNBREAD
                                                           Martha Kingston shared her Black Eyed Pea Salad...
                                                           2 cans black eyed peas, drained and rinsed
                                                           1 large tomato, diced
                                                           1/2 large red onion diced
                                                           1 red, yellow or orange bell pepper, diced
                                                           1 jalapeno, diced
                                                           4 green onions, sliced
                                                           1/3 cup cilantro, chopped
                                                           1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
                                                           2 Tbsp. Olive Oil
                                                           Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste


                                                             1.  Toss the veggies together in a large bowl
                                                             2.  In a small bowl whisk together vinegar, oil, salt and pepper.
                                                             3.  Pour dressing over the bean mixture, stir in cilantro, check
                                                               seasoning and refrigerate until ready to serve.  The longer it
                                                               sits the better the flavor.
