Volunteers
We Love Our Volunteers!
The Center for Coastal Studies could not fulfill its
mission without the dedicated help of more than 250
volunteers.
Under the direction of Volunteer Coordinator and
Retail Manager Jennifer McFarland, docents share
the story of Spinnaker the humpback whale with
visitors to the Hiebert Lab in Provincetown, and staff
the busy retail kiosk on MacMillan Pier. Volunteers
also help spread the word about CCS’ work at public
events, like the Wellfleet Oysterfest and the Harwich
Cranberry Festival.
CCS programs also rely on volunteers to advance
research. Citizen scientists do essential sample Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer McFarland with Eric Cordes at the 2023
Harwich Cranberry Festival.
collection for the Water Quality Monitoring Program,
and help in the lab with activities like archiving
zooplankton samples for the Right Whale Ecology
Program.
Volunteers collect sediment core samples and deploy
sediment traps in towns across the Cape for the Land-
Sea Interaction program, and participate in work to
protect and study local seagrass beds.
Perhaps the most intrepid group of volunteers is
the Beach Brigade, which boasts more than 120
volunteers who brave all conditions to undertake
enormous efforts to collect and tally debris on the
shoreline. In 2024 they assisted in ten beach cleanups,
including week-long residencies on Cuttyhunk and
Boston Harbor Islands.
Interested in volunteering at CCS? Mary Grace Keating and Brian Schneider staff the Spinnaker Exhibit at the
CCS Lab.
