Phil MUSICIANS
MEET MARY CICCONETTI
Phil musician, Mary Cicconetti shares her earliest memories and reflections about music in the podcast
series, Power of Music, created by Belmont Media for the Powers Music School.
The theme that “music fills us, music brings us joy, and brings us together” permeates the discussion as
Mary plays oboe and talks about her love of Latin music and French composers, the importance of finding
a passion (at any age) and her gratitude to her students who gave her a reason to play despite a year
without performances.
My name is Mary. I am an oboist.
Cicconetti identifies as an oboist before anything else: “Music is my way to express myself.” She happily
describes her childhood memories of music and the discovery of an intuitive relationship with notes and
sound: “I could read music before I could read words.”
It was during the spring of 6th grade that Mary connected her innate talents to the instrument that would
become an integral part of her life. She recalls in detail her first oboe lesson and her mother’s realization
that this was the beginning of a life path.
