The Sound and the Fury:

        Music and Mother Nature

        A Concert for All Ages!

Each season, The Phil performs a special concert for all ages, bursting with youthful talent and
        energy.
This year will be no different with the weather-themed adventure, The Sound and the Fury: Music
and Mother Nature. Our special guests will include WCVB-Channel 5 Meteorologist, Mike Wankum
and South Shore Conservatory’s youth concerto competition winner, 12-year-old pianist Grace
        Chen.
“The unleashed power of a symphony orchestra is like Mother Nature herself,” exclaimed
conductor Karidoyanes, “and great composers harness that energy to represent realistic-sounding
storm sequences in music. I thought, ‘Putting these sounds together would make a real exciting
concert!’ The Sound and the Fury is the result.”

In a novel way to describe to the audience the sonic storms they are about to hear, Karidoyanes
enlisted meteorologist Mike Wankum to “forecast” the weather in a downpour of exuberant music,
from Strauss’ Thunder & Lightning Polka and Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony to Rossini’s William
Tell Overture, and Sousa’s The Thunderer.

Another force of nature on this program is Hingham resident, Grace Chen. She will perform music
from Mendelssohn’s beautiful and stirring Piano Concerto No. 1 in G Minor.

Mike Wankum is an award-winning forecaster with thirteen regional Emmy Awards and numerous
AP and Mass Broadcasters awards for his weather coverage. He has been forecasting weather in
Boston for nearly three decades, joining WCVB-Channel 5 in December of 2006. Before that, he
served thirteen years as chief meteorologist at WLVI-TV. He and his family currently reside on the
        South Shore.
Grace Chen started playing piano at the age of four and is now a seasoned performer at the age
of 12. Along with winning several piano competitions, she has been honored to play at both
Carnegie Hall in New York and Jordan Hall in Boston. She studies with Ms. HuiMin Wang at the
South Shore Conservatory. Chen also plays the cello and enjoys ice hockey in her spare time.
The Sound and the Fury: Music and Mother Nature will be held at Plymouth’s Memorial Hall on
Sunday, March 6 at 3 PM. Unfortunately, due to Covid concerns, the orchestra will not hold its
popular pre-concert instrument demonstration. The Phil is offering special reduced ticket pricing,
making this an ideal concert for anyone new to live orchestral music or anyone who wants to
experience a delightful afternoon of upbeat entertainment.
