          Meet the Horn!

A shining star of the orchestra —
          and the movies!
           What is the Horn?

             • The horn is a brass instrument made of more than 12 feet of
coiled tubing — if you stretched it out, it would be taller than
               a giraffe!
             • Players create its signature mellow, golden sound by buzzing
their lips into a metal mouthpiece and using valves to change
               pitch.
             • Unlike other brass instruments, the player’s right hand rests
inside the bell, helping to fine-tune pitch and tone color.

           The Horn Goes to Hollywood

The Horn is everywhere in film music — it often
           symbolizes heroism, nostalgia, or adventure.

Star Wars The opening fanfare features Horns blazing!
The Lion King Horns add warmth and majesty to “Circle of Life.”

Titanic Listen for the haunting Horn lines beneath the love theme.

The Lord of the Rings Horns evoke courage and the call to battle.

                              Did You Know?

We mentioned that if you uncoil a Horn and straighten
it out, it would measure about 12–13 feet long. However,
that’s just the standard horn. A double horn has extra
tubing for even more flexibility in range and tuning and has
          a length between 17 – 22 feet.
