When you buy used, second-hand, or vintage clothing
Treat all used, second-hand or vintage clothing before you take it into your flat or house because it could contain moths.
It’s best to take all the clothing to a dry cleaner before allowing it into your home. If it’s vintage or antique clothing, take it to a specialist dry cleaner who knows how to treat the often delicate fabrics found in this type of clothing.
For delicate fabrics, silks and woollens, put the items in a bag and place it in the freezer for a week to kill off any moths. (Do remember to remove the clothes from the freezer!)
If the clothing can withstand a hot washing machine cycle, wash the clothes at temperatures above 60°C which will kill moths, eggs and their larvae. Follow it with a hot tumble dry. We would usually suggest washing at 30°C and following with a hot tumble drying programme but if clothes are washed at these lower temperatures remember to use moth killers to protect them because experts believe the moth larvae is not killed at these lower temperatures.
