FAI Intermediate Cup: Cobh Wanderers 2-2 Willow Park
The seniors will have to travel to Athlone for a 3rd round replay in this year’s Intermediate Cup
after a late equaliser from the visitors meant stalemate at Old Church Park today. Willow Park
started the game well and took the lead on nine minutes.
A good move down the right saw the winger reach the end line before pulling the ball back for
the in-rushing striker to hit a left footed effort to the net. Wanderer’s first chance to draw level
came from a free kick which was headed over by Eoin Hastings after 22 minutes.
The equaliser did arrive in the 33rd minute when a Cian O’ Connor cross was headed down by
Dave Curran in the box to the feet of George Keating who had the time to stroke the ball into
the net. Wanderers took the lead straight after the restart when Dave Curran was on hand to
finish a slick move. The home side missed a few chances to stretch their lead and just when it
looked like we were going to hold out for the win a free kick in the fourth minute of injury time
was flicked to the net ensuring the two teams will have to do battle again next weekend to see
who advances to the next round of the cup.
Scorers: George Keating 33, Dave Curran 46. Willow Park 9&90+4
Team: Brendan Keating, Kyle Downing, Dave Stack, Anthony Wolfe, John Meade, Jason Ab-
bott, Eoin Hastings, Dave Curran, Cian O’ Connor(Shane Geasley 78), George Keating(Brian
Fitzgerald 72), Jimmy Griffin.
Over 35’s Floodlit League Result: Cobh Wanderers 1-1 Crofton Celtic
This result owed almost everything to the brilliance of Jason Greene in the Wanderers goal as
he pulled off a string of world class saves to deny Crofton what could have been a comfortable
win. Wanderers took the lead mid-way through the first half when one of the many outstand-
ing corners on the night from Paul Geasley was headed into his own net by the Crofton player,
under pressure from Jonathan O’ Mahony who forced the error.
Tommy Cronin was Wanderers most creative player on the night and did some great work
down the right side. Trevor Rowe ran tirelessly up front and held the ball up very well all night.
Crofton looked the more dangerous team from set pieces though and eventually in the second
half they managed to convert one of their many chances from a corner on the left which was
headed back across goal and touched over the line for a deserved equaliser.
Team: Jason Greene, Sean Geasley, Jonathan O’ Mahony, Rob O’ Keeffe, Dave Kinsella, Jimmy
Quinlan, Tommy Cronin, Anthony Mahoney, Dwayne Breen (Damien Rowe), Trevor Rowe, Paul
Geasley.
