Updates from Local Councillor Cathal Rasmussen December 2018
I am delighted that at long last Irish Water has agreed that a long term solution has
being found to the water issue in Belvelly. I have been working very closely with Irish
Water and the residents in the area over the last few
months and while the routing of the new main will
take some time yet the important point is that Irish
Water has agreed to fund the project. The residents
in the area have suffered bad water for years and at
last their concerns have been listened to. Irish Water
will still have to continue to treat the problem line in
an effort to improve and make safe the old supply
while we wait for the work to begin.
At the same time I am fighting alongside the resi-
dents from Belvelly all along the route to the old
dockyard to try and have these areas included in the new lower harbour drainage
scheme. This issue is complicated and will cost Irish Water up to 8 million approximately
to include these areas. I will continue fighting and raising this issue with Irish Water with
my hope that we can get agreement to include these areas in the scheme.
The council roads improvement for 2018 finished in Cobh recently and I was delighted
as promised that areas listed for repair were completed. While I will never be satisfied
with the amount of road repairs being done we are moving in the right direction and this
year after much lobbying I am happy that much progress has been made on some very
poor stretches of road in the town. I will continue to argue for more repairs to continue
as already with the constant rain some sections are starting to break up. Some works are
ongoing on foot paths and if you have a stretch of footpath in your area that needs at-
tention feel free to contact me and I will try and have it included for repair.
No further update on the Lower Harbour scheme other than it is due to start in April /
May 2019 but I will have plenty of news on the scheme early in the New Year.
The planned pedestrian crossing between Colaiste Muire and Scoil St Iosaef was ap-
proved recently at our meeting. Work will begin on the crossing shortly and the job is out
to tender at present. Some concerns were raised by some locals and these issues were
taken into consideration by the engineers at the final design. Once completed it will make
crossing the road much safer for all users.
Early in the New Year Cobh Municipal grant forms will become available for 2019. These
local grants will be available to all local clubs, organisations, and residents associations
etc. to apply for. Now is the time to start planning for these grants and more information
will become available shortly.
Our town of Cobh is a great town made up of great people with so much to offer. I would
like to acknowledge and thank all those who work in any way to help improve their com-
munities and who give of their time freely. Our town continues to improve in so many
ways but we must all work hard to ensure this improvement continues. I will continue to
work hard for the people of Cobh in the year ahead as again many challenges face the
town.
I would like to wish a happy, safe and peaceful Christmas to you and all your families and
I look forward to working with you again in 2019. If I can help in any way please feel free
to contact me on 0868878421 or rosemountcobh1@eircom.net
