Update from your local Councillor Cathal Rasmussen March 2019
Recently we all received the disappointing news that the planned parade on St Patrick ’s Day
this year was to be cancelled. There were a number of reasons for this cancellation and as a
community we must work to plan for next year to ensure
that there will be a parade in Cobh in 2020.I would like
to thank the outgoing committee for their years of hard
work in running the event and hopefully 2020 will see
the return of the parade.
While this was a blow to Cobh ,on a positive note it is
great to the see that the plans are well advanced once
again for the proposed Marina at white point. Planning
permission is under way with the support of Cork County
Council and I was delighted to work with the relevant
groups over the last months to ensure that sailing in
Cobh will continue to flourish. Plans are well advanced for
the sailing calendar this season and I am looking forward to seeing the harbour busy again this
summer.
At the same time more positive news for both Cobh and the whole harbour area with the
launch of the planned Cobh Air Spectacular which will take place on July 12th 2020. I am
delighted to be a member of the organising committee and this planned air display promises
to a spectacular event Thousands of people will flock to our town and harbour and there is
no doubt that Cork Harbour is an ideal location for such a show. To run such a show requires
cooperation and assistance from many groups ,organisations and local people. Over the com-
ing months more information will become available and the full list of display teams will be
announced in due course.
The issue of motorists continuing to speed in and around our town is causing widespread con-
cern amongst many people especially in and around our estates .Please be aware of pedestri-
ans and I am appealing to all motorists to take care, slow down and to drive carefully in and
around the town. The lower harbour drainage scheme is still scheduled to begin work this year
in Cobh. While they cannot work in the centre of the town during the tourist season they are
due to begin preliminary works. We are still waiting to meet with them to discuss routes and
the timing of the work and I will advise as soon as it becomes clearer. There is no doubt that
this planned work will pose considerable challenges for us all both from a community and busi-
ness point of view and a lot of cooperation from all sections in our community will be needed
to lessen the impact on our town. As a result of these planned works sections of our roads
which badly need to be resurfaced have to wait until the drainage is completed. In the mean-
time the council are working to maintain the roads while dealing with potholes on a daily basis.
Feel free to contact me to advise of potholes in your area that need to sorted. Irish water are
due in May to begin work on laying the new water pipe on Ticknock Hill to finally deal with
the continuous broken water main on the hill. The road will be resurfaced during the year once
the work is completed . I am still working to find a resolution to the issue of the raw sewerage
being pumped into the harbour from Belvelly into the dockyard area and plans are advancing
well for the laying of the new water main later in the year in Belvelly area also.
Finally the issue of dog fouling is still causing us all huge concerns. The council and local tidy
town members are working hard to find a solution to this scourge in our town. I believe that
there is no simple solution to the problem but it will take us all as a community working to-
gether to hopefully reduce and eradicate the problem.
