JUNIOR RESULT: Cobh Wanderers 5-0 Carrigaline United A.
The juniors made it two wins from two with a convincing vic-
tory over a very experienced Carrigaline side. It did however
take 40 minutes to register the first goal of the game and a
half time score of 1 nil did not suggest an easy 2nd period.
Carrigaline started the game very well and had the upper
hand in the opening phase before Wanderers first decent
effort came from Jamie Gilmartin, who had a fine game
throughout, after 16 minutes when his strong shot from the
edge of the box was tipped over. A header from the resultant
corner went just wide of the near post.
On 22 minutes Josh O’ Mahony left the full back on his back-
side before finding Darren Cronin with an excellent right foot
cross but his header went wide of the post. Darren Cronin and Kevin Wilmot exchanged neat
passes inside the box on 31 minutes before a tame effort was easily saved and the visitors
broke down the field only to see a super lob smack off the crossbar and out to safety for a let-
off. A great move produced the opening goal as Keelan Lee found Derry O’ Hanlon on the left
wing and his pinpoint cross picked out the head of Cronin and he made no mistake this time.
Jamie Gilmartin should have extended the lead 3 minutes into the second half when Ian Mur-
phy’s cross found him in the middle of the goal but his header was straight at the keeper, when
a yard either side would have found the net. Gilmartin had a sweet strike from the corner fly
just over the bar. It only took another minute for Wanderers to stretch the lead when Kevin
Wilmot hit a low drive from the edge of the box under the keeper’s dive and into the back of
the net.
It was plain sailing after that. Darren Cronin added his second 56 minutes finishing via a
strong deflection off the last defender, following a comedy of errors in the Carrigaline defence.
Sean Power provided the cross for Ian Murphy to score the fourth with an easy finish once he
got to the ball before the defender. Keelan Lee scored the pick of the goals in the 85th minute
when he strode forward from midfield before unleashing an unstoppable effort past a despair-
ing keeper from all of 25 yards to round off a very good night for the juniors. Standout per-
formances tonight from the evergreen Dave Walsh along with the new young talent of Jamie
Gilmartin, Josh O’ Mahony and Keelan Lee meant a very pleasing occasion for the management
team of Trevor Rowe, Anthony O’ Beirnes, Pa Brady and Tom McCarthy.
Scorers: Darren Cronin 40&56, Kevin Wilmot 49, Ian Murphy 75, Keelan Lee 85.
Team: Michael Walsh, Ian Murphy, Derry O’ Hanlon (Sean O’ Reilly 67), Corey Griffin (Niall
Abbott 50), Farrell O’ Connor, Dave Walsh, Josh O’ Mahony, Keelan Lee, Darren Cronin (Barry
Chandler 71), Kevin Wilmot (Sean Power 56), Jamie Gilmartin (Calvin Murphy 62).
SENIOR RESULT Cobh Wanderers 1-0 Mayfield United.
Chubbs was the man to salvage three points from the wreckage that is.....
Anthony Wolfe started a move from the back that saw Dave Stack show great skill up the left
wing before crossing to Chubbs who slotted past the keeper for the only goal of the game. The
lack of celebration at the end suggested a relief because of the narrow margin of victory for
some and maybe something different for others!
Scorer: Ian Stapleton 23.
Team: Mark Power, Kyle Downing, Anthony Wolfe, Brian Fitzgerald, Dave Stack, Dave
Curran(Owen Kinsella 88), Jason Abbott, George Keating(Conor Walsh 61), Ian Stapleton, Cian
O’ connor, Jimmy Griffin.
