Liverpool Legends 5 v Ramblers/LOI Legends 4

Without doubt, Saturday 24th August will be remembered by
many, especially Cobh’s Eddie Desmond who stepped up to
bury a last-kick-of the game penalty against the helpless for-
mer Cobh Wanderers net-stopper Willie O’Hanlon who found
himself stranded as the ball thundererd into his bottom left
hand corner with fierce venom. Of the penaly itself, O’Hanlon
said he was ‘totally wrong-footed and there was only going
    to be one outcome’.
Before the main match, spectators saw Springfield Ramblers
battle it out with Midelton FC for the inaugural U16 Cobh
Edition Cup in which the visitors took the honours. Many thanks to Peter Greene
and Ian Kirby for bringing the Midleton side to Cobh. Thank you also to Mick Ben-
net, Vincent O’Driscoll and coaching staff for providing the opposition. All the boys
thoroughly enjoyed their day in front of a large crowd and the silverware was later
presented to both teams by Liverpool Legend Ray Houghton. What a buzz that must
    have been.
Gracing the turf of the famous St.Colman’s Park, the home of LOI side Cobh Ram-
bers were the likes of Republic of Ireland and Liverpool Legends Ronnie Whelan and
Ray Houghton along with Scottish Internationl Gary Gillespie and former Liverpool
players Jimmy Carter and Michael Thomas who’ll always be remembered for stealing
the league title away from Liverpool when he netted for Arsenal in 1989.
Orgainised by Cobh Edition and a group of volunteers the day itself was all about
raising much needed funds for Cobh Community Hospital and as we pen this piece,
we are still awaiting the remaining pledged funds to come in.

Local players Mick Devine, Davin O’Neill, John Meade, Sean Geasly, Damien Rowe,
James Langan and Greg Hamilton made up the balance of the Liverpool side which
also saw LOI greats George O’Callaghan and Liam Kearney among others line out in
the famous red. whilst Willie O’Hanlon, Paul Keating, Jamie Cullimore, Paul O’Neill,
Wimmi, Eddie O’Halloran, Bob Donovan, John O’Rourke, Niall Abbott, Tony Neiland,
Coochie, Ger Burns, Jimmy Hally, Mossy Mahony, , Michael Stapleton, Jimmy Quin-
lan Derek Barrett, Willie Bruton, Anthony Kenneally, Stuart Ashton, Jason Kabia,
Jason Lynch, John Murphy, Anthony Fennelly, Ger Long and more lined out for the
Ramblers/LOI Select managed by Ramblers’ legend Liam McMahon.
The day itself concluded with an evening meal followed by a Q&A session at the
Commodore Hotel hosted by popular Radio Presenter Mick Mulcahy.

There are so many people to thank for bringing this memorable day to Cobh and we
must thank The Commodore Hotel for going over and beyond in accommodating us,
Cobh Ramblers FC for the use of their ground and facilities, Jim Hickey of Pressure
Hydraulics & Controls, John O’Rourke of Macron Store Cork and Cobh Credit Union,
Derek Corcoran, Yvonne Burke, Cobh Gardai, Dr.Harry Kelleher and Cobh Red Cross.

Thanks also Match Day MC Marc O’Driscoll and to all the players, sponsors, local
businesses and individuals, and not forgetting the people of Cobh themselves who
